Saddam "Rush Job"

I know, I know. It's old news. But the question still remains. Why? What was the rush?

A couple of months ago the trial for the gassing of the Kurds got started. Other trials, for his savage repression of the Kurdish revolt in 1988 and the Shia revolt in 1991, were scheduled for 2007. But none of these trials will ever see the light of day. what did they hanged Saddam for then? They hanged him for the murder of 148 villagers in the town of Dujail.

Why Dujail? Why didn't they hang him for;

Killing members of the Communist Party

Launching an invasion of Iran (killing an estimated 500,000)

Killing his own Kurdish population

Invading Kuwait

Killing Shias

Use of internationally banned weapons

torture of thousands of political prisoners.

I think Gwynne Dyer put it best "It's as if they had taken Adolf Hitler alive in 1945, but ignored his responsibility for starting the Second World War and his murder of six million Jews and just put him on trial for executing people suspected of involvement in the July 1944 bomb plot."

why? because the US wanted to kill any pre-us invasion national pride. Saddam being manhandled by foreigners was a living symbol of pre-us Iraq's weakness and shame. Saddam was paraded on international TV as a trophy at a public trial. And the sooner the better for the US. Think about it, what if Nixon, in spite of what he did, had been ousted by international force and hung. Regardless, if you hated or loved him, most Americans would still be embarrassed.

what we should have done:

we should have let him sit in prison until there is a complete Anglo-American withdraw lfrom Iraq. Than the Iraqis can do with him as they wish.

but that is only my opinion...
